What Is Football?


Football is a team sport played with a ball that is kicked across a field. It is played by teams of 11 players, each made up of offense and defense players. Each team has different specialized positions, including offensive and defensive linemen, running backs and wide receivers.


The goal of an offense is to advance the ball down the field and score points by crossing over the other team’s goal line or catching a pass in the end zone. This is called a touchdown and counts as 6 points. The offense can also attempt to kick the ball through the goal posts for an additional 2 points, which is a two-point conversion.

Offensive plays typically start with a “snap” where one player, the centre, passes the ball between his legs to a teammate who runs with it. The play is then repeated several times until the offensive team advances enough yards to get a first down or fails to do so and ends in a score.


A fumble is when the ball carrier or quarterback drops the ball before being tackled. Any team can recover a fumble and regain possession of the ball by diving on it or running with it.


There are many rules that must be followed during a game, and these are usually enforced by referees who throw yellow flags onto the field after violations occur. These penalties normally result in the offending team losing between 5-15 yards of field position.

Specialized Players
