The Basics of Basketball

Basketball is a sport which is played by two teams of players. Each team has the objective of putting the ball through the hoop. The team with more points wins the match. A made basket is worth three points. If the score is tied, the game will end in overtime.

There are two main types of basketball players, offensive and defensive. Offensive players will use dribbling to keep the ball moving around the court. They may also pass the ball to a teammate. Defensive players will block shots. No player will be allowed to block the ball in a downward trajectory towards the basket. Depending on the level of play, each team will have different rules. For example, offensive players cannot stay in the same key for more than three seconds without attempting a shot.

Each team has five players. However, a maximum of 18 players is permitted for some games. Teams can change the number of players at any time during a game. Normally, players have 10 seconds to move into the opposing half of the court. After the first quarter, teams switch sides.

A basketball court is rectangular and has two elevated baskets. The paint runs from the end line to the free throw line. It is also angled. When playing, each player must position himself near the basket to get rebounds.

Unlike most sports, there is no specific number of players per side. In the early days, a game would include nine players. During the 1980s, cable television carried regular season college games. High school championships were also televised in some states.

There are various rules and special equipment used in basketball. Many of these are specified by professional leagues. For example, the NBA has specified the dimensions of regulation balls. Also, specialized basketballs are created for junior and intermediate players. These balls are used for indoor and outdoor play.

Most college basketball teams start with strength and conditioning workouts. Coaches may work with their players for up to two hours a week during the preseason. Players can also have individual workouts after the start of the school year.

Players are required to take part in on-court strength and conditioning sessions at least 3-5 days a week. They can also have direct contact with their coaches while on the court.

Basketball is a fast-paced sport which requires many stops and goes. Players often perform crazi stunts to impress their fans. Since the sport has gained popularity, there are new rules and equipment introduced to improve the game.

One of the most popular basketball players is Michael Jordan. Other basketball stars include Wilt Chamberlain, Lew Alcindor, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Fans enjoy watching the shoes worn by their favorite players.

The first collegiate five-on-five game was played between the University of Iowa and the University of Chicago in 1896. After World War II, the popularity of the sport increased dramatically. Cable television also began carrying high school and college championship games.
